MUSCLE WEAKNESS IN PERSONS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SEPTEMBER 2010 LINDA H. CHUNG, B.S., UNIVERSITY OF OREGON M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D. Candidate, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Jane A. Kent-Braun Skeletal muscle weakness is a problem for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Alterations in the central nervous system may be the primary source of muscle weakness because of the pathophysiology of MS. However, changes in peripheral mediators of force production may also contribute to muscle weakness in persons with MS. The main objective of the dissertation was to systematically identify key neural (motor unit discharge rates, spasticity) and muscular (muscle size, contractile function) mechanisms of force production that may explain lower isometric strength and dynamic power in persons with MS compared with age-matched controls. The knee extensor muscles of the weaker leg were studied, because this muscle group is commonly affected by MS. We showed that persons with MS had lower peak isometric torque and dynamic power compared with controls. Persons with MS had lower motor unit discharge rates, smaller muscle size, and lower specific power compared with controls. There was no difference in passive torque (spasticity), specific strength, or maximal rate of force development between groups. Because differences in isometric strength between persons with MS and controls were abolished when torque was normalized to muscle

Evaluation of Thoracic Kyphosis Angle and Respiratory Functions in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Background. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease. Muscle weakness, tremors, balance disorders, and gait instability are observed in MS patients. Also, respiratory muscles weakness can lead to decreased respiratory capacity, resulting in pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. Objectives. This study evaluates thoracic kyphosis angle (TKA) and respiratory functi...

Background: Interferons (IFNs) are common therapeutics for several diseases such as viral hepatitis, multiple sclerosis and malignancy. A variety of autoimmune related side effects have been observed during IFN therapy. Rare cases of myopathy, polymyositis or dermatomyositis have been reported during therapy with high doses of IFN^5. Case Presentation: In this report, we describe a case with se...

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system that causes inflammation, muscular weakness and a loss of motor coordination. Over time, MS patients typically become permanently disabled and, in some cases, the disease can be fatal. According to the US National Multiple Sclerosis Society, about 200 people are diagnosed every week with the disease ‐‐ often...

Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic and autoimmune disease. Muscle weakness and fatigue leads to decreased functional capacities and diminished quality of life in Multiple Sclerosis patients Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of aerobic exercises on fatigue and quality of life in women with Multiple Sclerosis Methods: Fifteen wome...
متن کاملEvaluation of vertical ground reaction force during walking in patients with multiple sclerosis
Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) suffer from inabilities such as weakness and muscle fatigue due to the demyelination. The inabilities may result in some disorders in walking. The present study is a clinical trial research conducted on 84 participants in two groups of experimental and control who were randomly selected. The results showed that people with MS apply more force on the ground ...
